The Diversity Lottery is also commonly know as the Green Card Lottery which gives about 55,000 visas to potential immigrants from foreign countries to live and work in the United States. Being a winner of the lottery does not guarantee one of getting a green card as there are additional conditions that are to be fulfilled. There William M. Before the registration period of the diversity lottery, the State Department will publish in its web site the instructions for the lottery program. These instruction are generally posted during the month of August every year. The submission period for the lottery will happen anywhere between the months October to November each year.

There are two main criteria to qualify for the diversity lottery:

The first and foremost criteria is that the applicant should be from an eligible country. If for any reason he does not qualify for the reasons of being born in an ineligible country, he /she can still qualify through his/her spouse or parent. The second criteria is that the applicant should either have a full high school education of 12 years of have an experience in a profession that would require two years training or related work experience.

Unlike other green card application the diversity lottery application is simple and easy to fill. But care should be taken to prepare this application diligently. The reason is because many applications are rejected due to minor errors in the application. As an applicant, perfect care should be taken while preparing the application and uploading the photos.

Applicants will be asked to provide photos of all the persons listed in the application. The United States government has laid down strict rules while processing a diversity lottery application. There are strict ground rules regarding photos. Except in cases where religious beliefs dictate otherwise, the applicant’s face should be fully visible and should not be draped or covered. Further, the applicant should be facing the camera directly as photo(s) taken with side poses are not accepted.

Between the months of May and July of every year the results of the lottery are announced. These results will be sent to the lucky applicants with an official letter from the Department of State Kentucky Consular Center which is located in Williamsburg, Kentucky. All notification will only be sent to the address provided in the application and there will not be any e mail notification.

Successful winners of the diversity lottery enjoy all the advantages and benefits of an American green card holder, which includes health and educational benefits, employment opportunities and the icing on the cake is that they can also start the process of becoming a United States citizen.
